carboliq is developing a technology for the direct oiling of plastics from different fractions. Using a purely electrical, energy-efficient process, mixed and contaminated plastic waste can be processed into a crude oil substitute product (CLR), from which plastics of virgin grade quality can be produced. The applied technology promotes the circular economy in the plastics industry.

Direct oiling

The process is powered purely electrical, meaning 100 % renewable energy can be applied for it and Scope 1 and 2 emissions can fall down to zero. Due to its low temperature below 400 °C and atmospheric pressure it is both energy efficient and comparably safe. The heat input happens only by friction in reaction mixers, causing intensified mixing, optimized heat transfer and constant product quality.

After three years of three-shift operation, the process is now ready for the scale-up from TRL 8 of the pilot plant to TRL 9 of a first commercial plant with an output of 10,000 t/a of the crude oil substitute product. After the process has been accompanied by a global engineering partner over the past few years, no more technical show stoppers have been identified. The pilot plant is now used to test new materials in the process and new equipment to optimize the process. Thanks to its capacity of 1000 t/a input, relevant data on mass, energy and material balances can be generated for large-scale projects and technical developments can be tested. This means that a real laboratory exists with which commercially relevant parameters can be determined under comparable conditions, but at significantly lower costs than in large-scale plants.
